and he's off

Karl Meltzer, who has won Hardrock several times, leaves today in an attempt to break the record on the 2,174 mile long Appalacian Trail. He'll be carrying a GPS and you can follow his progress here. He needs to average over 45 miles per day for the next 47 days.

I hiked part of the Applacian Trail way back in high school with Outward Bound. It was my first real outdoor trip and included my first time ever rock climbing. Had a profound effect on my life, as I would veer more and more towards outdoor activities from that point on.
