track
Thurs - run commute 17. Hit the CC track on the way to the office. Not much time so I just ran a mile as hard as I could. 5:54, not too terrible since one of the turns still has significant ice. Now through February and my goal of one incline and one track session or race per week is still going strong.

incline 13
Wow, another shitty weather week. Who woulda thunk it.
Mon - bike commute 13. Biking has been pretty much non-existent this month due to the super low temps. Straight to/from work. Warmest of my available nights so I then headed over to the incline.
Tues - run commute 16. Real good five miler to work. CityRock 22 at lunch. Then some weird snow squall/cold front moved in and it was way below freezing at 5PM. 3.5 miles straight home.
Wed - 6F when the alarm went off at 4:30. Also 6F when the alarm went off again at 5:15. Brewed some coffee then let the dog out for a quick shit in the yard. Drove to CityRock and had a good workout there, where it was room temperature.
On Thursday it's the G Love show at the Black Sheep, then early Friday I'm off to Atlanta to stalk Galen Rupp. Running the Atlanta 5k on Sunday.
February has not been good for my fitness. When the month rolled in I thought about maybe actually getting into shape for Salida. Nope. But hey, there's always this:

winter series IV
Bit hungover from Pliny the Younger on Friday, but I had one last race in the Winter Series I had to finish on Saturday. Not a great run, but I got it done and held onto my first place age group (I think second place may have been hungover as well). 10k in 44:46. I did lose to the 13 year old chick but beat her in the overall series. Solid showing all around for team Roman Villa.
After the race we biked over to Manitou Mardi Gras and drank way too much and had way too much fun. Needless to say my run on Sunday wasn't anything to write about.

incline 12
Mon - track. Holmes was a mess and there was some shitty weather moving in and I didn't have much time. 4 x 200. Not much, but better than nothing.
Tues - run commute 14. Four miles to work. Met $100 at Cerberus after work for the Med Wheel happy hour. Drank some beers with Dave Wiens. Multiple Pb100 bike titles represented in this pic:
Wed - nothing. This weather is crushing my soul.
Thurs - more shitty weather but I at least got to CityRock early for a good climb. On Thursday evening I was supposed to go see Trump at his local rally, but by 9:30AM that place had pretty much been locked down. No way I would have got in at 4PM when I could have arrived. So I went and did the incline instead.
Fri - run commute 15. And a good climb at lunch. Finally starting to warm up. Until Sunday, when it's supposed to snow again.

outdoor hockey
Our village hosted an NHL game over the weekend, which apparently upset the rich Denver/Boulder folks who could shell out $200 per ticket but still had to deal with traffic like us commonfolk. Bummer for them.
But on Monday there was another game, Air Force vs. Colorado College. Announced attendance of just over 7000, so it was much easier travel. Really good time even if it was freezing cold sitting on the metal bleachers and Air Force lost the game.
Air Force women's cross-country team was honored during the game:

san luis valley
Snuck out for a long weekend in the van, a good thing since we just got hit with yet another round of big snow.
The usual Friday post-work quick drive to Florence Brewing and Oil Well Flats. I wanted to get in a long run but the trails were muddy, so I did a road run from OWF down to the Riverwalk trail in Canon, then over to Skyline Drive. Solid 15+ miler.
On Saturday it was off to Penitente Canyon, exploring another part of the San Luis Valley. Great place, and it allowed us to grab an early dinner at Three Barrel Brewing. Loved the area and we will be back, probably to climb.
$100 did her long run on Sunday, and I spent that time hiking with the dog. After that we headed over to Crestone. Then the van's first trip to the UFO watchtower.
Spent Sun night at the Sand Dunes Swimming Pool, which is becoming a favorite of ours. Up early Monday to make the trek back home to COS. Very quick trip but we had a blast.

track/incline 11
Staying with the recent theme, shitty weather. I've just put away the bike for the time being. Not warming up enough to melt the snow and ice, so everything just kind of sucks for riding/running right now.
Mon - run commute 11. Five miles to work, four miles home.
Tues - run commute 12. 4.2 miles to work.
Wed - run commute 13. Six miles there, 5.4 back home. On the way to work I dropped by the Colorado College track, which was over half covered in snow and ice. 5 x 400m. Shitty workout, but at least I got my weekly trip in. Ran through Sondermann home, and it's all snow and ice. $100 and I had a good climb at CityRock in the evening, made even better since Red Leg is the brewery of the month there.
Thurs - we have been waking up to temps in the mid-teens for a few days, including today. I slept in and after a quick dog walk hopped on the bus to work. After work I had to force myself over to the incline, unable to put it off since we'll be leaving town Friday after work. As usual, after the slog up Ruxton the incline became a fantastic place to be. I guess it's been so cold the snow hasn't had a chance to melt during the day, so there's not a whole lot of ice right now. Plus, there was a nice inversion and halfway up the incline I found myself above the clouds. Only saw one other guy the entire loop. Ended up at the Manitou Legion drinking hot toddys with the owner of Trinity Brewing after the run.
Fri - bike commute twelve. 16F when I got up, but it was winter bike to work day, so I met some co-workers at Loyal Coffee to take advantage of some freebees. Woke the klunk up from hibernation for the ride.
Oil Well Flats for Friday night, then off to the San Luis Valley to enjoy the long weekend.

cold as ice
On Sunday I got to go ice climbing for the first time ever. Was not expecting to enjoy it but I had a blast. Went out to Camp Alexander where they have a beginner ice block. Some pics from the day (none of which are of me):

winter series III
On Friday after running home $100 and I went over to Fossil before heading to Lulu's to catch Zach Deputy. They had cheap Utica Club at Lulu's! Zach put on a great show, really hoping Lulu's stays open.
Saturday was the third installment of the winter series. We are going through some terrible weather here in COS, and I'm barely hanging on to any fitness. The past two winter series races have saved me as I've been able to get really hard efforts in.
Here I am battling mini-Kara Goucher in the first half mile of the race. She would hang with this pack through 1.5 miles before having her hopes and dreams crushed.
Wes made decisive move on a hill around 2.3 miles into the race and I was unable to counter. Ran 6:19 and 6:14 for the final two miles (downhill) but I just couldn't catch back up. Did put a good chunk of time on Richard though. 33:37 for five miles. Thanks to Peter and Tom for the pics.
After the game we hung out at Lost Friend Brewing for a bit before heading up to The Hill to see Air Force Hoops take on #4 San Diego State. As an added bonus, I got to achieve a life long dream of seeing the Cheese It Bowl trophy in person. Air Force hung close for most of the game but gassed out over the final few minutes. San Diego State is solid but I have a hard time believing they're the fourth best team in the country.

snow
I am really glad all my Austin buddies survived the snow. Here's a shot a friend sent me of how bad things got down there:
Wed - run commute eight. 3.6 miles to work. Ended up hitting Cerberus Brewing on the way home and mooched a ride off the wife.
Thurs - run commute nine. 5.2 miles to work through Sondermann. 3.6 miles home. CityRock 15 at lunch.
Fri - another round of good snow last night. Felt like Rocky trudging through six inches of powder on the Midland Trail. Of course as I'm about to get off the Midland and head downtown, the plow comes along to clear the thing. Good CityRock climb at lunch.
Another shot from winter series two, courtesy of Tim B. Notice Wes behind me. He stayed there all race.

incline 10
Lousy weather week. Significant snow and temps way below freezing. Thankfully Punxy Phil says there shouldn't be too much more of this shit.
Mon - run commute seven. Four miles in 35 minutes. CityRock 13 at lunch. Watched the snow pile up at Fossil later that evening.
Tues - lot of snow this morning. Took the bus to work. Good climb with my buddy Mike over lunch. After work $100 and I did the incline. I drop her off at the base and it was 9F. Great night to climb though, and the snow was fantastic on both the steps and Barr. I assume after today the conditions over there will be terrible, so I'm glad I got in my incline for the week. Manitou Brewing afterwards to celebrate.

the week that wasn't...
Wed - run commute six. 4.2 miles to work, 3.5 miles back home.
Thurs - been trying to fight off the Wu-Tang Corona virus and felt like crud today. So I didn't do anything. Three mile dog hike before jumping on the bus to work. Even bailed on CityRock.
Fri - still feeling like CRUD plus it was balls cold out this morning. One mile dog hike, swept the walks (we got about an inch of snow), jumped the bus to work. I did buy a compass at Mountain Chalet, so at least that is outdoorsey. Started to finally feel better towards 5PM, and I did get out for a 5k run after work.
So definitely a down week, but on the good side I got through the avalanche class (assuming I don't die during the field sessions this weekend).
For January:
run - 140 miles, 30:18:53
ride - 224 miles, 20:46:57
hike - 94 miles, 36:51:05
Plus twelve sessions at CityRock, and even a few hours of hot yoga. And nine inclines.
Not great, but definitely stepping things up a little from my lazy December. Only about six weeks until Salida, so it's time to start thinking about getting ready for that.

incline 9
Fri - incline number seven with the Cadet. Her first night incline. Her uncle and I spent every Friday (and Thursday, and Saturday, and Sunday...) night drinking heavily so at least she is ahead of us in that regard.
Sat - winter series two at Cheyenne Mountain State Park. I had a really good run. For just over three miles of the 3.75 mile (was supposed to be four flat but the RD sucks) course I was dueling, and losing to, a twelve year old girl. I remember this same girl two years ago, at age ten, hanging out just ahead of me for 2.5 miles the last time I went sub 18 at a 5k. I am definitely not getting any faster, and this girl is still not beating me. What the fuck is wrong with parents nowadays?
Took advantage of the warm weather to head out for a quick mountain bike ride after the race. Still icy at Red Rock Canyon but it was good to be reminded that I haven't been climbing much on the bike. Ended the ride at Fossil.
Good numbers for the week considering it's winter.
hike - 24 miles
bike - 58 miles, 5:41
run - 30 miles, 5:30
Sun - incline 8 & 9. Solid double. Plus an hour of hot yoga in the evening.
Mon - today was the annual homeless census so my day was all over the place. I did get to the track in the evening for 8 x 200m. Comical how slow my 200m speed is nowadays, but getting to the track is better than not getting to the track. I have made it through January with one incline and one track/race per week.
Tues - bike commute eleven.
I have a Colorado Mountain Club avalanche class this week (Tues and Thurs classroom sessions, then two outdoor sessions on Sat and Sun) and the CMC ice climbing class next week. So that should put a good dent in training. I am not looking to pick up snow sports but I need these prerequisites for the CMC High Altitude Mountaineering School that ends with a climb of Rainier.

bike commute 10
Tues - run commute four, CityRock ten. A good AM run and solid lunch of climbing.
Wed - bike commute nine, CityRock eleven.
Thurs - run commute five, CityRock twelve. Some good bouldering at lunch.
Fri - easy bike commute ten. Might have drank a bit too much at Fossil on Thurs after work.
$100 has become deathly ill, possibly the Wu-Tang Corona virus, and called in sick to work for the first time since I've known her.
Not quite as exciting at Pearl Jam ticket news: scored $5 tix to see Air Force hoops vs. the current #4 San Diego State. Included with the ticket is the opportunity to take a picture with the Cheese-It Bowl trophy. I know you're jealous.

sand dunes
Took the van down to the San Luis Valley over the weekend. The usual Friday post-work spot at Oil Well Flats, then Sat and Sun nights at the Dunes.
On Saturday we spend some time at the Dunes before heading up to the Zapata Falls campground. It was cold and I was surprised to see three other campers there. One was in a tent, and I actually thought about checking on him Sunday morning, but I passed. Hope he didn't freeze to death.
Up early Sunday to head back to the Dunes for a good hike.
After the hike we headed over to Del Norte for lunch at Three Barrel Brewing.
Then we decided to try a new place, the Sand Dunes Swimming Pool. We loved it. Heated pools and hot tubs, and a bar. A bit pricey, a tent site was $25 (compared to Zapata, which is $11) and then you still had to pay to get into the pools. But we had a blast.
When we woke up on Monday it was -8F. Definitely the coldest we've ever slept in the van. Hopefully a record that stands forever.
Left pretty early on Monday to get home in time to hit the DIM Hash. BLOS and I took the pack from Benny's to Tony's along the path of the recent stabbing spree. Good times.

incline 6/track
Wed - bike commute seven. Eleven miles to work, four miles back. After that I headed over to Manitou for incline number six. This is the time of year when after work feels so damn late just because it's so dark. Felt like I started the incline at 2AM, though it was really 6:30PM.
Thurs - bike commute eight. Same 11/4 combo as Wed. CityRock nine at lunch, where I had a very high gravity day and wasn't able to get very far up any of the walls I tried.
Fri - up early to hit the track. Needed to get this to keep my one track session or race every week. First two weeks were the Rescue Run and Winter Series. Not good conditions at 5AM - probably 17F with light but steady winds. 6 x 400m with 200m RBI. Didn't time these as my watch was under four layers of clothes and I'm guessing they were all well over 90.
We are headed down to Canon City after work, then to the Sand Dunes for Sat and Sun. Will likely see below 0F at the Zapata campsite where we stay. Back on Monday so BLOS and I can hare a DIM hash that follows the route of the recent stabbing spree.

weekend/stabbings/remains
Fri - bike commute five. We have basically turned into a two vehicle family, but one of those vehicles is a huge van which is a pain in the ass to drive around the city. So today I had to bike to work, then bolt at lunch to bike to/from a dentist appointment, and then ride home. And somehow I survived. Incline five after work.
Sat - nice early morning visit to the Bear Creek Dog Park followed by the first race in the PPRR Winter Series. Difficult 5K course with three big hills and lots of ice, so I was happy with barely breaking 21 minutes.
Then it was Black Forest Brewing, then Bull & Bush, then Sancho's, then a few more bars before heading to the Mission Ballroom to see the Infamous Stringdusters. Needless to say I was a bit of a hot mess for the show, but it was a great time.
Sun - hungover, but still got out for a run. Tried to hit the track at East High School but it was all locked up, so I did a big loop of City Park.
Mon/Tues commutes - some weird stuff going on in the Springs. Around 1AM on Monday there was a weird stabbing spree that started on the Midland Trail and proceeded down to America The Beautiful Park along my normal commute route. The dude then rolled up to the Tony's area and stabbed some more people. I ran this route on Tuesday morning and saw blood on the paved path. And on Monday as I was riding home north on the Santa Fe trail, they had a huge portion of the park, near the start of the Nielsen Challenge, covered in police tape with a huge police presence. Turns out they found some human remains there.
Clearly all this is a sign that I should stop going to work!

run commute 1
Mon - bike commute three, 21 miles total. Good session at CityRock at lunch.
Tues - run commute one. 4.2 miles to work, 3.4 miles back home. CityRock four at lunch.
Trying to up my gym climbing game this year. Would like to get to the point where I can reliably climb 5.9 and V4 indoors. Currently I consider myself a 5.8/V3 guy. The 5.9 should be easy if I can figure out how to deal with my fear of heights. The V4 portion is going to take some work.
I signed up for the Rut Trifecta. Last race I'll be entering other than some local low key races I'll jump into from time to time. Will be shooting for three more states in '20 - Montana, Illinois, and Florida. Current Rut plan is to do a van trip, riding the Alpine 50 in Lake City and then exploring Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana.
Last race I'll be entering other than some local low key races I'll jump into from time to time. incline 4
Thurs - bike commute one. 21.5 miles on the day. And a good lunch climb at CityRock.
Fri - bike commute two. Ten miles to work, four back home, followed by my second incline of the year.
Sat - I want to commit to one incline and one track session or race every week in 2020. So I hopped on the bike and rode over to Monument Valley Park for the two mile Nielsen Challenge. Not a great run for me, I was still 100 meters from the start line when the gun went off, then I had to work through hundreds of runners on the bike path, a good chunk of which was covered in ice. But I ran hard, hitting mile one in 6:38 and coming back in 6:05 to finish in 12:52.
After that we packed up the van and headed down to Fremont County. First stop was Florence Mountain Park where we hiked Newlin Creek. Awesome trail and we will definitely go back once the snow and ice melt, will be a great summer hike with the dog. After the hike we hit up Florence Brewing before heading out to Oil Well Flats. Got there without much daylight left, so after another quick dog hike we got a good fire going. Early return on Sunday as we had to pick up our cadet at the airport at 8:30AM.
Sun - two trips up the Incline. Eight miles took me almost three hours. An hour of hot yoga to end the weekend.
