Kanza

Finally got an account of the DK200 up on Pikes Peak Sports.  Grab a beer and go check it out.

I read it but didn't feel like logging in to PPSPORTS to leave a comment. I'd rather be under the radar. Like the wind, come and go without a trace.

Dirty Kanza...perfect. I have a semi-history with that race even though I've never done it and I'm pretty sure I've never even been to Emporia (though I dated a girl from there who drove a camaro. They all do. It's as awesome as it sounds).

One of the founders of this race was a guy named Joel Dyke. "Big Grin". He died about 18 months ago, and I found out he's one of the only people in the world who's death would make me cry. He was my roommate for a year, or rather, I was his. He took me in when my girlfriend literally told me "Get the hell out!" (Not the Camaro girl, she had a Tercel). I'd known Joel for years before we were roommates...I think we met in 1999. A few years later (92?) there was this ride called "The Flint Hills Death Ride". I think it was a metric century, about 60 miles. Really hard. I think Joel based Dirty Kanza on the death ride, and one year we drove and rode it together. So I'm convinced he started Dirty Kanza partly because of me. Yeah, he must have.
So will I ever do DK200? Fuck,no. Rides like that are fun up to 50 miles, then I wilt like a lily. So my hat's off to you, that ride was a big deal. Especially in a black T-shirt, that wouldn't have been my choice. Harder than a 100 mile run? what do you think?

They have a 100 mile ride which would be much more tolerable.

Kanza was hard for me because I didn't prepare correctly. Had I done a few century rides and carried more water, this would have been much easier than a 100 mile run. Struggling as I did, it took me 18.5 hours, much less time than it takes to do a mountain hundo when I'm in shape (my best at Leadville is 23.5 hours).

"As I filled my Osprey bladder, I realized this was probably one of the grossest things I had ever done."

But you did it! Dude... this is one of the funniest, grossest, and most bad ass things that I have ever read! EVER! Awesome JT... just awesome! :)
