Badwater

While wasting time at work I checked on the price for Badwater. $995 just to sign up. Ouch.

I'm still gonna do it.

Glad you liked the Monkey! Any Vegas places I should visit?

Yes! "The Heart Attack Cafe" is just North of "The Strip" in old Las Vegas.I never made it, but it sounds great if you get the chance. Check out the website.
If you are staying on the strip, "La Salsa Cantina" across from "New York New York" has a $3.95 breakfast that is amazing, I don't know how they do it. Also, you can get a triple Bloody Mary for breakfast for $5.95. "The Grand Canyon Experience" store beside La Salsa Cantina sells tall Boys of Miller Highlife for $1.00 each.
Man I love that place.

Have a great run!

When you're in Vegas, you HAVE to go to Mt. Charleston. You won't believe you're anywhere near Vegas. Shoot me an email and I can send you a Picassa link to my pics from a few years ago in a blizzard. Less than an hour from the Strip.

$995 to enter a race that provides no aid whatsoever is absurd. What is the $995 going to? I don't mind paying a hefty fee for a race if I know what it's going to provide to the runners.

You get a sweet COTTON t-shirt! Much better than the crappy tech tees that most races give out.

From the website:

Where Does the Entry Fee Go?: It costs a fortune to organize a world-class event in this remote, unique, and inhospitable environment. Everything we need - and everybody we need - has to be transported to Death Valley from 150 to 3000 miles away. Some of the key expenditures are insurance, permits, ambulance on patrol, expenses for the 50+ volunteers (hotels, gas, food, and more, for five days for 50+ people), renting 25 satellite phones and 25 high-powered radios, the eight-to-ten person medial team (and associated expenses and supplies), the eight person webcast team (and associated expenses and supplies), graphic design, web hosting, web design, web software and database development, promotional expenses, printing, postage, utilities, overhead, rental cars, airfares, food, drink, ice, medals, buckles, organic cotton t-shirts and hats, post-race pizza party for 300+ people. Last, but not least, the Race Director spends about 1000 hours per year working specifically on behalf of this event. Others work tirelessly year-round, too, to create a safe and successful race. Finally, we only have about 90 entry fees with which to work, not hundreds like some races.

I'm sure Leadville would do this if their permits only allowed 100 runners.

And per mile it is cheaper than Bolder Boulder...
