I do that all the time! I guess I'm one of the unlucky few that doesn't have a pressurized air hose in my apt complex parking lot.

I've aired up a tire with a hand-pump once; I think it took a half hour. I think I paid $5 for that cheapie I used at TXIH. That Sun we also used it to air up Villiage Clitiot's jeep tire, and it was knocked off the rim.
